Dr. Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk is Associate Professor of Voice and Director of Opera at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her directing experience ranges from Shakespeare to opera to musical theatre. Recent shows include Mozart's La Finta Semplice, The Merry Widow, Man of La Mancha, Handel's Semele, Britten's The Burning Fiery Furnace, Dido and Aeneas, The Magic Flute, The Fantasticks, Oklahoma!, Fiddler on the Roof, Peter Pan, two productions of Pirates of Penzance and three productions of Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, as well as numerous opera and musical theatre scenes.
Under her direction, UAB Opera has grown into a nationally award-winning program. National Opera Association named UAB Opera a national finalist in the 2010 Collegiate Opera Scenes competition. In the 2011 Opera Production competition, NOA awarded UAB Opera's production of Britten's The Burning Fiery Furnace first place, and in 2012 awarded Amahl and the Night Visitors second place.
