READY FOR THIS: A WHOLE-PERSON GUIDE TO COLLEGE AND LIFEMost college-success books teach students what to do. Ready for This asks a different question: who does a student need to become in order to do those things sustainably, and without losing themselves in the process?
Drawing from performance anxiety research, mindfulness, movement science, cognitive behavioral practice, Alexander Technique, and more than two decades of college teaching, this book offers students a whole-person foundation for college and life. Its organizing philosophy is the Alexander Technique concept of means whereby — that how students pursue outcomes shapes both the outcomes and the people pursuing them. Students are rarely taught this. This book teaches it.
Ready for This is designed for First Year Experience courses, student success and honors seminars, wellness courses, performance programs, and any context where instructors want a text that builds the student alongside, or before, the academic demands of college. It is written to feel less like a textbook students are assigned and more like a field guide they are relieved to have.
Currently under contract with Cognella, Inc.

“Hearing Hurst-Wajszczuk and Gainey work as one on these songs just underlines the music’s power. This is a most moving selection of songs for voice and clarinet, beautifully recorded; music to touch both heart and spirit.”
Colin Clarke
Fanfare
“Hurst-Wajszczuk brings an informed approach to each programme she prepares leaving the audience not only aware that they are in the presence of a learned scholar but also a performer with a fresh modern sensibility.”

Austin Clark
Director / Founder, Bourbon Baroque
“The performances by soprano Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk and clarinetist Denise Gainey are inward and focused… This is a fine addition to the repertory of music that takes up the subject of the Holocaust.”

Each year, the UAB Department of Music spotlights ensembles and faculty in a gala “Prism” concert. This is from the 2022 Prism, when I performed a Kurt Weill song with esteemed and much-beloved colleague Yakov Kasman.
